Design And Build Quality

The MAONO WM820 Wireless Microphone System consists of two transmitters and one RX unit. The overall build quality is very good considering the low cost, they have an all-plastic body that is compact and simple and only comes in black.

The transmitters adopt a square design with rounded edges and weigh about 30g. The body is made of plastic and features the MAONO logo in white letters on the front with a chrome ring in addition to two LED indicators for pairing or battery on the top and a clip on the back to attach the receiver to the clothes. It also has a 3.5 mm microphone input jack in addition to a built-in microphone. At the bottom, there is a USB-C port for charging.

The device is easy to use as on the side it has three buttons:

  • Power Button – Press and hold the power button for 2 seconds to turn on/off the unit.
  • Mute Button – Single-click the mute button to mute and unmute. The LED light will turn red when muted.
  • Pair Button – Press and hold the pair button to pair the transmitter to the receiver.

What I find a drawback with the transmitter is its size, which makes it almost impossible to go completely unnoticed.

The receiver is also very light and has a very compact design with the company logo on both the front and back of the device, having only one USB-C connection to connect to your cell phone, tablet, or laptop. The only thing that distinguishes the two parts is the presence of a very small blue LED. It flashes when it is searching for the transmitter and when it can pair with the device, it is steady.

At the bottom of the Maono WM820 receiver, a hole was found to reset the device by holding the button inside for two seconds. The reset is only if you are having problems syncing the transmitters with the receiver.

Connectivity

For connectivity, And just like almost every other affordable wireless microphone system, the MAONO WM820 uses the 2.4GHz spectrum with a range of up to 35m in the open area, not a large distance but it serves the purpose. And one of its strengths because it is very easy to pair with devices. Everything happens quickly and automatically, without major problems.

All you have to do is press the button to turn on two transmitters or one, then connect the receiver via the USB-C port in the Android device or even laptop, then press the pairing button for 2 seconds, then press the restart button on the hole at the bottom of the receiver for 3 seconds and this is for one time or when there are pairing problems. After that, it will connect to it automatically and actually work directly, in a very practical and fast way.

Unfortunately, since the system does not have any screen or application, it ends up having no additional controls or changes to make to the audio obtained from the device.

Lighting also plays a role in determining the state of the coupling so that: solid-connected; flash – offline; Quick Flash – Pairing is in progress.

Audio Quality

When testing any microphone it is difficult to assess the sound quality it gets due to a large number of factors that are directly related to this issue, whether it is its equipment, the environment around it, or even the way the device is used.

In our tests of the MAONO WM820, the built-in omnidirectional microphone with MNCT denoise tech and professional audio chip for delivering natural and clear audio so did not perform badly. It’s certainly not perfect, but I feel safe enough to say that it outperforms most competitors in the same range. If you’re the type of person looking to use the microphone for presentations, video calls, and even content production, it’s a good deal with good, clear sound, but it doesn’t have to be perfect on a recording studio level for example. The 80Hz to 16kHz frequency range should help smooth out sub-bass tones.

Unfortunately, even though the microphone is designed to be used by two people simultaneously, the audio output from the two transmitters is combined. So instead of having two separate audios, you end up getting one audio track and end up not being able to work with them individually. And this is the only negative point that you may encounter. The WM820 has a 3.5mm input where an external microphone can be added.

Low Latency

If there is a wireless connection, this means that there is a delay in a certain frequency. For this reason, a high level of efficiency is required. This is what Maono offers in the WM820 with low latency and a range of up to 35 meters and a higher signal-to-noise ratio (82dB) than the more expensive competition. Of course, this distance is very variable and depends a lot on the environment you are in if there are many obstacles, etc, and also if you have devices that can cause interference in place.

Battery And Charging Time

The transmitter is equipped with a 350mAh battery that can be recharged through the device’s USB-C port. This is via a USB-A to 2 USB-C cable charger that can charge both TX units simultaneously at the same time and you could attach it to a USB-C power bank. Regarding battery life, takes 2 hours to recharge and provides a battery life of 5-6 hours depending on the type of use, this is a very convenient time that meets the needs of most users, as you will hardly work on recording those long videos.

The lighting here also plays a role as:

  • No lights = internal battery is above 20%
  • Red LED flash = the internal battery is less than 20%
  • Steady red LED = charging.
  • Finally, when it is fully charged, the red light will turn off.

Final Verdict

The MAONO WM820 mic system is one of the most affordable options on the market right now, with longer runtime and higher signal-to-noise ratio (82dB), and high-quality sound compared to other wireless microphones systems in the same price range.
