Relive the nostalgia of classic arcade parlors without the hassle of building a complex DIY cabinet or housing a bulky mini-PC. The Lenovo Legion Tab Gaming Arcade offers an ingenious way to convert a Lenovo Legion Y700 tablet into a functional bartop arcade machine.

Official SNK Collaboration and Retro Styling

Lenovo secured official licensing from SNK to release this dock in three distinct visual designs, including a standard Lenovo skin, a Metal Slug edition, and a King of Fighters version. My testing unit features the striking King of Fighters artwork, which instantly evokes the aesthetic of 1990s arcade cabinets. The graphics are sharp and applied beautifully across the exterior shell, making the unit double as an eye-catching desk ornament even when the tablet is not docked.

The chassis itself lacks an internal battery, keeping the total weight manageable while relying on a direct USB-C connection to interface with the tablet. Sliding the tablet into the dock activates a secure, tension-loaded plastic mechanism that grips the device tightly without scratching the edges. This clever mechanical design ensures that assembly and disassembly take less than ten seconds, allowing you to transition from a handheld tablet to a stationary arcade setup almost instantly.

Portable play is technically possible given the unit’s physical size, though its bulky shape makes it better suited for home use. Weighing 803 grams empty and exactly one kilogram with the tablet installed, the dock remains light enough to carry from room to room with ease. The physical footprint provides a highly stable base on flat surfaces, preventing the cabinet from sliding around during frantic, high-input gaming sessions.

    Y700 Compatibility and Mechanical Design

Lenovo officially advertises compatibility for the fourth and fifth generations of the Legion Y700 tablet. My hands-on testing confirms that the second-generation Y700 also fits and functions flawlessly within this dock. The marketing materials likely focus on newer generations for promotional reasons, but owners of older Y700 models can purchase this accessory with confidence knowing the USB-C alignment and physical dimensions line up perfectly.

Users of the fifth-generation Y700 enjoy the convenience of docking the tablet while keeping the official protective case attached. Owners of the second-generation tablet must remove any protective cases before sliding the device into the mounting slot. The snug fit ensures optimal electrical contact with the USB-C plug, preventing accidental disconnections during intense play sessions.

Power Delivery and Smart Bypass Charging

Continuous gaming on a tablet usually presents thermal and battery degradation challenges, but Lenovo resolved this by implementing smart power passthrough. Connecting a USB-C power cable to the rear port of the dock supplies electricity directly to both the dock and the tablet. This setup supports bypass charging, meaning the tablet routes external power directly to its system components instead of constantly cycling the battery.

Inputting a 27W charge delivers approximately 22.5W directly to the tablet, maintaining a stable power supply during prolonged play. This power routing strategy keeps the tablet running cool and preserves battery health over long-term usage. Gamers can indulge in all-night retro sessions without worrying about battery drain or thermal throttling.

    Dedicated Controls and Mapping Switches

The control panel features an eight-way joystick paired with front-mounted ABXY buttons and shoulder triggers, including RL, ZR, and ZL. One of the most impressive hardware additions is the physical slider switch labeled LS, DP, and RS. This switch allows players to map the physical joystick to act as the left analog stick, the directional D-pad, or the right analog stick on the fly.

Having this hardware-level toggle solves compatibility issues across different emulators and native Android games. Some older titles only accept D-pad inputs, while modern mobile games often require analog stick emulation. A dedicated Turbo button sits alongside a Home button, complete with a subtle red LED indicator that glows when rapid-fire mode is active.

Complex modern games like Genshin Impact remain playable but present camera control challenges due to the presence of only a single joystick. Controlling your character works perfectly, but adjusting the game’s camera viewpoint requires manual touch screen intervention. The layout shines brightest when paired with classic fighting games, platformers, and arcade emulators designed for single-stick setups.

    Tactile Response and Hardware Modification

The compact design forces the joystick and the 16mm action buttons relatively close together, requiring a slightly condensed hand posture. The stock joystick shaft is relatively short with a low travel angle, which might initially raise doubts about executing complex motion inputs. Testing with fighting games like Street Fighter and King of Fighters proves these fears groundless, as special moves and combos register smoothly with high accuracy.

Disassembling the unit reveals a simple interior layout that invites aftermarket customization for demanding arcade enthusiasts. Unscrewing the bottom panel allows you to replace the short factory joystick with a longer aftermarket lever and install a higher-tension spring. This simple modification elevates the control feel from a slightly toy-like response to an authentic, heavy-duty arcade experience.

Input latency is practically non-existent, making competitive games like Tekken feel incredibly responsive and satisfying. Button noise remains moderate, producing a noticeable click that avoids being loud enough to disturb others in the household. The combination of minimal lag and tactile buttons creates a highly immersive retro gaming experience.

Final Thoughts — Price & Value

Evaluating this accessory reveals exceptional value for owners of the Lenovo Legion Y700 tablet series. Spending between $100 and $110 USD for a fully licensed, high-quality SNK cabinet shell is a bargain compared to the cost of custom-built DIY bartop solutions. The inclusion of bypass charging, a responsive layout, and seamless hardware-level key mapping makes this a highly functional addition to any gaming setup.

Casual players and dedicated emulator enthusiasts alike will appreciate the seamless integration this dock provides. Modifying the internal stick and buttons can elevate the tactile experience even further for those demanding arcade-grade perfection. This unique dock successfully delivers a premium, space-saving retro arcade experience without the premium price tag.
