An essential aspect of the design is the ventilation system. The bottom of the unit is well-equipped with ventilation grilles, ensuring effective heat dissipation. The inclusion of a gigabit Ethernet port is a notable upgrade, providing faster and more stable internet connectivity, which is particularly beneficial for streaming high-definition content. However, the absence of a USB 3.0 port, especially towards the end of 2023, is a surprising omission and may be a drawback for users requiring faster data transfer speeds.

The device also features an HDMI 2.1 port, ensuring compatibility with the latest displays and offering high-quality video output. The power input is standard, with a 12V 1A power adapter, which is adequate for the device’s operational requirements.

Hardware Performance

The Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe is a powerful and feature-rich Android TV box that showcases significant advancements in hardware capabilities. At the heart of the KM2 Plus Deluxe lies the Amlogic S905X4 processor. This quad-core Cortex-A55 CPU clocked at up to 2 GHz, is tailored for efficient and smooth performance. This processor is known for its good manufacturing quality at 12nm and gives you 30 percent more performance than the previous generation compared to the S905X3 found in most TV box devices. Also, It’s designed for high-performance devices and supports AV1 decoding which is now mandatory for popular streaming services.

Paired with the Mali-G31 MP2 GPU, It is a mid-range TV box chip that is perfectly suited for this use and at this price level. which is a notable upgrade from its predecessor, offering improved processing power and efficiency. The variant J of this processor, specific to this model, supports advanced visual and audio features, further enhancing the multimedia experience.

So, This SoC is designed to handle the demands of modern streaming and gaming with ease. These components work to deliver powerful performance and stunning visuals and offer a very smooth experience throughout the system, and the interface functions effortlessly, with applications opening rapidly. With this hardware, you also have enough power to install emulators and enjoy gaming on platforms.

Memory and Storage

Equipped with 4 GB of DDR4 RAM, the KM2 Plus Deluxe stands out among many certified devices that typically offer only 2 GB. This extra memory ensures fluid multitasking and seamless navigation through apps and menus. For storage, the device boasts a generous 32 GB eMMC of internal space, a significant upgrade from the standard 8 to 16 GB found in similar devices. This ample storage accommodates more apps and media, providing users with the flexibility to download and store a greater variety of content.

Gaming Performance

The device comfortably handles popular games available on the Google Play Store, such as e water-motorbike racing and role-playing games ran without noticeable lag, indicating the device’s capability to handle graphically less intensive games efficiently. While the Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe performs admirably with certain games, it’s important to note its limitations. The device is not designed for high-end gaming. Graphically intensive games or those requiring high processing power may not perform optimally on this platform. So should temper their expectations and understand that while the device offers a decent gaming experience, it is not a substitute for dedicated gaming consoles.

In comparison to other similar streaming devices, the Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe holds its ground well in the gaming arena. Its hardware configuration, particularly the increased RAM and storage, gives it an edge over many competitors within a similar price range.

Thermal Performance and Reliability

Thermal performance in electronic devices, especially ones like the Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe, is crucial. It directly impacts the overall efficiency, longevity, and reliability of the device. Poor thermal management can lead to overheating, which may degrade performance and reduce the lifespan of the internal components. The KM2 Plus Deluxe is encased in a fully plastic body. The design includes a significant feature for heat management – ample ventilation grills on the bottom. These grills facilitate airflow, playing a crucial role in dissipating heat effectively.

Even after prolonged usage, maintains a stable temperature. This stability is a testament to its effective heat management system. Performance tests have shown that the device typically operates within the safe temperature range, rarely exceeding 33 degrees Celsius, even under load. This range is well within the acceptable limits for such devices, indicating a low risk of thermal throttling or hardware failure due to overheating. In comparison to some competitors, the KM2 Plus Deluxe holds its ground well in terms of thermal performance.

Software and User Interface

The Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe has emerged as a significant contender in the Android TV box market. Its software and user interface stand out as pivotal factors contributing to its overall user experience. The KM2 Plus Deluxe presents a user-friendly interface, adorned with the latest design ethos from Google. You must verify that the system and apps are updated to activate. Running on Android TV version 11, the KM2 Plus Deluxe offers a fluid and intuitive user experience. Manufactured by Skyworth Digital, a reputed name in device production, the device guarantees stability and smooth operation.

In the beginning, it’s fast to boot up, it will not take 35 seconds to take you directly to the launcher with some configuration wizard, where we can connect to the Wi-Fi network. The launcher is clean with a flat design and has a complete desktop layout for Android 11. In the interface, You’ll find a large advertising banner that highlights certain content from various platforms. Just above that, there are different sections tailored to your content recommendations based on your preferences and what you’re currently watching, including movies, series, documentaries, YouTube videos, and more.

This version of Android TV is an official release, ensuring consistent updates and compatibility with a wide range of apps. You will note the smoothness of the interface, which is free from lags and glitches commonly observed in non-certified counterparts. The stability extends to various applications, from streaming services like Netflix and Prime Video to gaming and other entertainment apps.

Additionally, this system is available for installing new apps. This version is adaptable and comes with the most common applications. Importantly, it is compatible with all of Google’s official certifications, so there are no limitations in using applications, which is an issue with many devices on the market. All of Google’s functions are available, including Chromecast, and Miracast you can effortlessly cast content from your mobile devices or PCs to your TV. I’m not going to say it’s super fast in operation. There is a slight delay.

I’m sure many of you are thinking about sideloading apps to watch a wide range of content. Well, you can sideload apps if you want to. You can download apps from outside the Google Play Store and install them via APK files, giving you more versatility, but be aware that doing so may void your warranty.

Beyond streaming, the Google TV ecosystem extends to a plethora of Google apps and tools. Google Assistant takes center stage, offering convenient, hands-free control over your TV. A simple voice command like “OK Google, open Netflix” instantly transports you to your favorite content. Also, This operating system ensures seamless access to a wide range of Google services and features, eliminating compatibility issues often encountered with uncertified devices.

Streaming Performance

To this day, it’s all about content, and to be more specific, it’s all about entertainment content. We all crave more episodes of our favorite series, more movies, and more streaming services to provide it all to us in the comfort of our own homes. With Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe, this little bundle of entertainment is the ultimate device for those wanting to turn their TVs into the smart entertainment home center of their dreams.

Video Playback

I tested local 4K sources with Kodi, and it worked fine. The test used a 4K movie with Dolby Vision from “Extraction 2,” which is 17.1GB in size. Fast forwarding was smooth, so for the S905X4 processor, decoding local 4K sources (in this case, files from NAS) is not a problem. Playing 4K HDR videos on YouTube also works flawlessly.

Was that all? Well, that was quick! This device supports the latest viewing technologies that will take your favorite movies and series to the next level. Two standard features are 4K streaming and HDR 10 Plus, which combine to give you the best visuals in every situation. Now, further enhancing your viewing experience are my two favorite Dolbys – Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Dolby Vision is a technology designed to unlock the full potential of your HDR technology by taking each image and optimizing it based on the device you are using as well as the platform. Dolby Atmos is an audio technology focused on building a spatial sound experience that immerses you in the content you are watching.

However, a slight inconsistency was noted with Dolby Atmos. While the device indicates compatibility and successfully activates Dolby Vision, it doesn’t always trigger Dolby Atmos for supported content. This inconsistency could be a firmware issue, which might be addressed in future updates.

And because it’s the latest processor, it allows it to decode a wide range of audio and video formats, ensuring compatibility with various media sources. Whether you’re playing local media from a USB drive or streaming content online, you can expect a seamless playback experience. It also supports AV1 decoding, which can save up to 50% of streaming bandwidth compared to VP9. So, this box is fully prepared for future streaming services. If you’re looking for a box that will receive updates and stay relevant for many years to come, this is a solid choice.

Streaming Service

Also, this TV box is Widevine L1 certified, allowing you to watch online services that require this certification in 4K quality. It’s also Netflix-licensed, and YouTube is pre-installed. The TV box plays 4K 60fps videos with 10-bit color. The richness of color and smoothness of motion in high-bitrate content, such as Sony’s high-quality 4K samples, was particularly commendable.

IPTV playlist apps work great and seamlessly and the TV channel zapping speed is fast. If you want to be able to watch movies, series, and TV channels for free, there are interesting videos that are going to appear at the top of your screen.

Connectivity

Users often find themselves at a crossroads when choosing between wired and wireless connections. With the Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe, you don’t have to make that tough decision. Its comprehensive connectivity options provide the best of both. You can opt for a wireless setup when convenience is key or go with wired connections for minimal latency and maximum stability. With Bluetooth 5.0 to pair wireless headphones for private listening or connect external input devices, dual-band Wi-Fi, and new WIFI6, HDMI 2.1.

One of the standout features of the KM2 Plus Deluxe is its integration of Wi-Fi 6 technology. Wi-Fi 6, known for its faster speeds, improved efficiency, and better performance in crowded network environments, is a forward-thinking inclusion. It offers impressive download speeds, significantly outperforming its predecessors and many competitors in the market. With Wi-Fi 6, this TV box can easily handle high-bandwidth activities like 4K streaming and online gaming, ensuring a seamless experience.

While wireless connections are the future, a stable wired connection is irreplaceable for many. The KM2 Plus Deluxe comes equipped with a gigabit Ethernet port, a significant upgrade from the 100 Mbps port found in the previous KM2 models. This gigabit port allows for ultra-fast and stable internet speeds, essential for uninterrupted streaming and large downloads. This feature is particularly beneficial for users who have access to high-speed internet connections and seek to utilize their full potential.

Remote Control and Accessibility

The remote of the KM2 Plus Deluxe is notably different from its predecessors. Featuring a sleek design, it’s fully equipped with a numerical pad, enhancing the overall user interaction. The build quality is solid, and it’s evident that Mecool has invested in making the remote feel premium in hand. One of the standout features of this remote is its customizable buttons. So, you have the flexibility to assign specific functions or applications to these buttons. This customization adds a level of convenience and personalization that is not commonly found in standard TV box remotes.

The remote operates on both Bluetooth and IR technology. This dual functionality ensures a more reliable and responsive connection. With an integrated microphone, the KM2 Plus Deluxe remote supports voice commands and is swift and accurate, illustrating the device’s capability to understand and execute a variety of commands effectively.

In practical use, the remote proves to be quite efficient. Its quick response time when switching between apps like Netflix and HBO Max, and during navigation, enhances the streaming experience. Although not primarily designed for gaming, the remote does a commendable job in basic navigation within games, offering a satisfactory experience for casual gaming.

The KM2 PLUS Deluxe model offers a significant upgrade over the KM2 PLUS, with double the RAM and storage capacity, higher Wi-Fi standard support, the inclusion of Dolby Vision, and AV1 codec support, which is important for future-proofing against newer video formats. The presence of a Gigabit Ethernet port also suggests better network performance, particularly for streaming high-definition content.
